Health and its Role in Behavior Problems

As our dear pets grow older, sometimes they start showing behavior changes. Let us explore common reasons for behavior change in older pets, as well as cognitive dysfunction syndrome in dogs and cats. Speakers: Linda Randall DVM, KPA-CTP, Tag Teach 3 (she/her) Linda Randall, DVM, is a certified professional dog trainer and a veterinarian. As a veterinarian, she focuses on the roles of physical and mental health in dogs and how these affect the ways in which they behave. Linda is certified through The Karen Pryor Academy and is a Level 3 certified TAG Teach trainer. She is an active member of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants and the Animal Training Academy. An internationally sought presenter, Linda has contributed to numerous professional training events, including One Mind Dogs, The Bitey End of the Dog, The Lemonade Conference, and the Association of Professional Dog Trainer's annual conference. Her focus has been on the role of Trauma Informed / Trauma Assumed care in animals and people and Race, Positive Reinforcement, and Kids.  Linda’s many experiences in life have helped her understand how compassion, generosity, and a gentle sense of humor can help us navigate the world and create a positive impact on those around us.   Kathie Nurena MD, KPA-CTP, CNWI (she/her) Kathie graduated for Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She completed her Family Medicine Residency at Stamford Hospital. She is now faculty at that program, with an interest in social determinants of health and scholarly activity. She also graduated from Karen Pryor Academy (KPA-CTP) and earned her Certified Nose Work Instructor (CNWI) certification. She currently teaches nosework classes at Alert K9. When Connecticut instituted a law mandating cross reporting of animal abuse and child abuse, Kathie helped organize the first educational lecture for animal control officers, Department of Children and Families social works, and others in the state. She has long appreciated how the principles of learning theory and the positive reinforcement principles she learning in animal training were relevant to her work with human learners. And, perhaps, some of the theories in the medical literature may be useful to animal trainers This webinar is part of our BIPOC Speaker Series. Is it Cognitive Dysfunction or Something Else?

As our dear pets grow older, sometimes they start showing behavior changes. Let us explore common reasons for behavior change in older pets, as well as cognitive dysfunction syndrome in dogs and cats. Speaker: Valli Parthasarathy (she/her) PhD, DVM, DACVB Dr. Valli Parthasarathy is a board-certified veterinary behaviorist. She owns Synergy Veterinary Behavior, a behavior specialty practice in Portland, OR. She helps families whose dogs, cats, bird, horses, and other species show problematic behaviors. Her goal is to help support positive behavioral change through greater mutual understanding and improved relationships between people and their animals. She has been invited to speak at national and international conferences on topics in veterinary behavior ranging from early recognition of problem behavior and treating behavior problems in various species, to making  veterinary care less stressful for patients. Dr. Valli believes by helping disseminate science-based animal behavior information to the general public, the lives of even more animals and their families can be improved. Happy Pets Happy Vets: Reducing Stress at the Vet Clinic

Speaker: Isamar Perez 10 years ago I attended Vet Tech school in Texas. I experienced firsthand how fast-paced and stimulating this environment was for humans and animals. This training prepared me to learn from the real world. While working in the real world as a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), I discovered that people walked into the clinic scared and frustrated. That scared feeling and frustration only intensified with every visit, for both pet and guardian, increasing the chances of someone accidentally getting bit. I noticed there are multiple parties involved whose actions all stack up towards a safer environment or a high risk and tense environment. This poses an increasing challenge for Vet clinics as well. I shifted from Vet Tech and focused on Animal Behavior to help people thrive with their pet, especially at the vet. Each guardian and pet has personalized techniques to build a lasting bond. Understanding Dog Body Language Using T.E.M.P.

Dogs don't speak human but their body can say millions of words. Understanding how to read a dogs body language can help in being proactive and not reactive. In this webinar you will gain a better understanding of reading a dogs body language through T.E.M.P. (Tail, Ears/Eyes, Mouth, and Posture) Speaker: Aaron Jones, ABCDT (he/him) I worked as a Vet Tech for over 12 years. Although I enjoyed my role dearly, there was still something missing. The medical side of care just did not feel like I was where I was supposed to be. I had always wanted to volunteer raising puppies to become service dogs, so I started researching non-profit organizations. I soon found one and attended my first meeting and was hooked. Training dogs is what makes me feel complete. It’s my calling. I attended Animal Behavior College where I earned my certification as a Certified Dog Trainer. I am a dog lover first, and a dog trainer second. I know from first-hand experience the difference dog training makes in the relationship between dog and owner. I believe in creating an unbreakable bond and a trusting relationship between dog and human using positive reinforcement techniques. This webinar is part of our BIPOC Speaker Series. Crash, Boom, Bang! Protocols for Dogs with Sound Sensitivity

It is estimated that anywhere from one-third to two-thirds of dogs have noise aversions! If you saw 12 dogs today, 4 to 8 of them are likely to develop noise sensitivities in their lifetime. Not only can a fear of sounds be physiologically and emotionally damaging for dogs, but it can also strain the human-animal relationship. This session will provide you with strategies for how to approach and prevent sound sensitivities, including teaching desired coping skills. Objectives: 1. Recognize the correlation between noise aversions, pain, and separation anxiety. 2. Discover options for teaching the dog successful coping strategies. 3. Identify environmental changes to help minimize a dog’s perception of fear-inducing sounds. FREE event, donations optional! Does my dog need behavior meds?!

Note: We had technical difficulties and lost the speaker feed a few minutes in- please excuse the hiccup! Treatment options (supplements, pheromones, diets, CBD, and medications) and how to know when a dog can benefit from medications and a veterinary behaviorist. Speaker: Esther Eng, DVM, Clinical Behavior Resident at the Animal Behavior Wellness Center. Dr. Eng grew up in Hockessin, DE and always wanted to become a veterinarian. As a child, she imagined her dream job – helping fearful and anxious animals cope with stress, while providing their people with the resources to improve communication and quality of life. During an overnight shift in the ER as a veterinary technician, she learned about the field of behavioral medicine and realized an occupation existed where she could fulfill her dream! After graduating from Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2018, Dr. Eng completed a rotating internship at the Hope Advanced Veterinary Center in Vienna, VA. She then worked as a general practitioner at Franklin Farm Veterinary Clinic in Herndon, VA using Fear Free techniques to provide care ranging from wellness visits to chronic illnesses. As Dr. Eng noticed more and more patients needing help with behavioral problems, she decided that a behavioral medicine residency would provide the opportunity to better care for patients while fulfilling her lifelong passion. Dr. Eng lives in Northern Virginia with her husband, parents, son, and two dogs. She loves eating good food with family/friends while playing games, chatting around the table, and just enjoying time together. ---- Dog training is for everyone.
